About the Position

Burton James is looking for a skilled and meticulous Lead Cutter to manage all aspects of fabric cutting. This position demands extensive expertise in upholstery materials such as fabrics, leathers, and trims, coupled with precision in pattern alignment and material estimation. The Lead Cutter is essential for fulfilling precise customer requirements for custom furniture, working in tandem with sewing, upholstery, and cushion departments to guarantee a smooth production process and maintain superior quality. Your Responsibilities

  • Direct and supervise daily fabric cutting activities, allocating tasks according to production schedules and team competencies.
  • Review work orders, shop drawings, and fabric guidelines to guarantee cutting accuracy and correct placement.
  • Precisely determine yardage needs, accounting for pattern repeats, pile direction, and bias cuts.
  • Arrange and cut fabrics to optimize material usage and ensure exact pattern and weave matching.
  • Examine all fabric for defects before cutting, noting and reporting any problems.
  • Supervise and instruct team members in correct cutting methods, pattern development, quality benchmarks, and safe tool operation.
  • Coordinate with upholstery, sewing, and cushion teams to confirm material readiness and specification compliance.
  • Keep cutting instruments and workspaces in optimal condition to promote precision, productivity, and safety.
  • Help maintain precise records of fabric inventory.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years in fabric cutting, preferably within high-end or custom furniture manufacturing; eight to ten years or more is highly desirable.
  • Comprehensive understanding of all upholstery fabric varieties, including woven textiles, velvet, leather, and specialty materials.
  • Established proficiency in pattern placement and yardage computation for intricate, custom projects.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a steadfast dedication to upholding top-tier quality.
  • Capable of accurately reading and interpreting work orders, shop drawings, and technical documents.
  • Proficient in the safe and effective operation of cutting equipment such as straight knives and rotary cutters.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities with experience in training, motivating, and assisting team members.
  • Punctual and dependable, with a practice of providing advance notice for tardiness or absence.
  • Maintains a tidy, orderly workspace; cares for tools and machinery; adheres to all safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Excellent communication skills; bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English is a significant advantage.
  • Submission of photographic examples from prior work is strongly recommended.

Compensation

Starting base pay ranges from $24.00 to $26.00+ per hour. Final compensation will depend on individual skills, experience, and geographic location.
