Position Overview

Roles within this classification serve as the entry point to the Hydroelectric Specialist series. They are tasked with maintaining equipment at the District\'s hydroelectric plants, pumping stations, treatment facilities, and other sites. These positions are characterized by the duty to perform skilled electrical work while concurrently acquiring knowledge of mechanical maintenance related to power systems equipment. Employees will operate under close guidance, undertaking tasks of increasing complexity as they gain experience via on-the-job and formal training. The principal duty involves conducting on-site electrical diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs for equipment located at MWD Pumping Plants, Water Treatment Plants, or Hydroelectric Facilities. Qualified applicants must possess comprehensive knowledge in troubleshooting, repairing, and testing motors, circuit breakers, relays, transformers, and associated high, medium, and low voltage electrical systems.

Schedule & Location

Schedule: 4/10, Monday through Thursday, 6:00 am to 4:30 pm. This role necessitates regular travel to various District facilities across the service area, often requiring overnight stays near project sites.

This position falls under Integrated Operations Planning and Support Services and is based at the Weymouth Treatment Plant in La Verne, CA.

Employment Standards

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: A high school diploma or equivalency certificate, plus a four-year electrical or mechanical apprenticeship and two years of journey-level experience; OR six years of progressive experience in industrial or utility electrical or mechanical maintenance. Applicants must demonstrate practical experience and knowledge in the operations, maintenance, and repair of hydroelectric plants, pump stations, treatment plants, and similar facilities. Required skills include the predictive and diagnostic assessment of complex utility pump and power equipment using analog and digital test instruments. Additionally, fundamental skills in installation, commissioning, and applying predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance practices within an industrial/utility context are required, typically gained through relevant training and experience.

Certifications, Licenses, and Registration Requirements

Employees in this role must obtain and maintain the following credentials:

  • A valid driver’s license from the state of residency equivalent to a California Class A, B, and/or C with appropriate commercial endorsements (A valid license equivalent to a California Class C is required at the time of application.)
