Job Summary

The selected candidate will be tasked with installing, maintaining, and providing ongoing support for wireless broadband internet services as part of the Tribal Digital Village Network. This role is comparable to that of a cable or satellite internet installer. Responsibilities include independently troubleshooting and resolving issues as they occur. The position involves working with computers and networking equipment related to radio communications, including the installation of internet routers, switches, and cabling. A background in computer networking is advantageous, and a strong interest in the field will be considered. The job entails occasional roof and tower climbing. The ideal applicant will possess outstanding customer service abilities and be physically fit. Familiarity with tower climbing and wireless communications is beneficial. This role involves significant outdoor and field work at various locations across San Diego County. Standard hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but occasional after-hours work may be necessary based on operational requirements. This is a non-exempt position.

Essential Functions

  1. Conduct tower construction tasks such as assembling and erecting towers, installing antennas and mounting hardware, running coaxial cables and connectors, performing grounding, testing, and positioning and optimizing antennas and lines.
  2. Install solar panels, mounting systems, electrical components, batteries, and enclosures, and seal electronics against water.
  3. Set up network hardware including switches, routers, media converters, wireless access points, microwave radios, and dishes.
  4. Execute repairs and upgrades safely and efficiently at elevated heights.
  5. Perform minor construction duties such as digging, weed abatement, brush clearing, and mixing and pouring concrete.
  6. Conduct residential installations, which involve drilling into walls, running cable, mounting antennas on roofs, and configuring indoor electronic equipment.
  7. Configure internet wireless routers, radios, antennas, and switches, and manage interfaces for multiple radio vendors.
  8. Install broadband wireless equipment in various settings, including rooftops, towers, poles, tribal buildings, and modular structures.
  9. Climb and work on towers to install, replace, or repair equipment.
  10. Drive to remote locations, navigating both maintained and unmaintained roads under diverse conditions.
  11. Interact with a range of clients, from residential subscribers to Tribal Leaders.
  12. Perform duties in both indoor and outdoor environments while maintaining a professional demeanor.
  13. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with planning teams and clients.
  14. Adhere strictly to confidentiality protocols regarding all program and customer information.

Job Requirements and Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or GED minimum.

Certificates & Licenses: A valid California Driver’s License with a driving record acceptable to SCTCA’s insurance provider. Certification in CPR/First Aid. Must complete and pass a Tower Safety Program and Testing, as well as training for Fall Protection Systems.

Knowledge Requirements: Practical understanding of Computer Networking; on-the-job training or Network+ certification is acceptable. Must be proficient with computers (Mac and PC) and the Internet. Knowledge of safety procedures and tower safety gear operation is preferred; candidate must be willing to learn and retain this information after training. Effective verbal and written communication and presentation skills are required, including the ability to write legibly and maintain neat, accurate records.

Ability Requirements: Capable of safely climbing towers up to 100 feet while carrying up to 70 pounds. Must be able to differentiate colors in cabling. Ability to drive in off-road conditions in rural areas.

Experience: One year of Computer Networking experience is preferred, involving office or home LANs. Experience with wireless networks is advantageous. Familiarity with network and system efficiency for implementing network solutions is desired.

Physical Demands: The role requires hiking, climbing (heights up to 100ft), digging, and other strenuous activities. Most work is performed at elevated heights. Must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 75 pounds. Employee total body weight must not exceed 310 pounds to comply with safety equipment guidelines. Work is primarily conducted outdoors, requiring tolerance of varying weather conditions.

Conditions of Employment: Successful completion of a background check and drug screening is mandatory. Must possess reliable personal transportation.
