My Professional Journey

I launched my first enterprise, a retail bicycle shop, in 1974. Beginning with $400, basic tools, and six used bicycles, it grew within five years to become the city\'s premier professional cycling store.

Even then, I served as a coach, teaching comprehensive bicycle repair, wheelbuilding, and framebuilding during winter months.

After selling the shop five years later, I purchased a motorhome and traveled across the United States. During this period, I guided two other struggling bicycle shops to recovery, one of which was $140,000 in debt. That business survived and continues to operate 44 years later.

After meeting a professional juggler, I pursued that art myself within a year, performing fire and knife comedy juggling shows in San Diego, Philadelphia, and Waikiki, and making a brief appearance in a Warner Brothers film.

Discovering a programming language called Turbo Pascal at a garage sale for $15 led to a year of study, after which I began software development. I eventually created a program distributed through Walmart, Sears, Kmart, Office Depot, and other retailers, selling over a quarter-million copies.

My subsequent ventures included a media exchange operating like a library without cards or due dates, where patrons could borrow unlimited books, CDs, and DVDs. The model relied on donations of unwanted media, which arrived in greater volume than they left. Items with limited local appeal, such as a book on underwater welding, were sold online, where they could fetch over $100. At its peak, my team and I listed 29,000 books on Amazon, Abe Books, and Alibris.

Website creation became another interest. Leveraging my programming background, I built sites and assisted others with deep customization and technical problem-solving.

Many clients faced greater challenges in operating their businesses than in building their websites. Consequently, I evolved into a coach, guiding them toward best practices for success, even in difficult markets.

Recognizing that some individuals struggled due to personal blocks, I studied Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) for two years, becoming a certified master practitioner. This allowed me to help clients address not only operational issues but also underlying psychological barriers to success in business, relationships, and life.

My additional experiences include running a mobile welding service, an RV repair business, eBay sales, and recently, coaching intermediate and advanced pickleball.
