POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Nursing Director, the Nursing Supervisor is responsible for delivering culturally sensitive healthcare services to adult patients with low incomes in Los Angeles County. This role emphasizes care for the LGBT population and other marginalized groups. The supervisor will lead a team of medical assistants, HIV/STD counselors, phlebotomists, and additional non-administrative personnel.

This individual will ensure the delivery of high-quality, cost-efficient patient care, manage treatment plans, and coordinate with providers and clinical staff to achieve positive patient outcomes within designated timelines while optimizing resources. The Nursing Supervisor will also collaborate with the Nursing Director to develop, execute, and oversee workflow procedures at the assigned APLA Health & Wellness facility. A key responsibility includes supporting the implementation of the Patient Centered Medical Home model.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Deliver clinical assistance to medical providers surrounding adult primary care appointments to facilitate prompt, quality healthcare.
  • Coordinate with non-administrative staff to ensure patients receive and can access specialty referrals without disruption to their care.
  • Provide treatment for sexually transmitted infections promptly and in accordance with established clinical protocols.
  • Administer vaccinations to adult patients following clinical guidelines.
  • Deliver and properly document patient health education.
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives as assigned by the medical director.
  • Conduct triage for adult patients presenting with urgent medical concerns, either in person or by telephone.
  • Assist front office personnel in managing late arrivals or rescheduled appointments by reviewing medical records to determine appropriate timing and location for patient visits.
  • Offer supervision, direction, and leadership to LVNs, medical assistants, phlebotomists, and other non-administrative staff.
  • Complete annual performance evaluations for assigned supervisees.
  • Develop and conduct training sessions and in-services for clinical staff.
  • Partner with the Nursing Director to address the ongoing training and educational requirements of the clinical team.
  • Maintain sufficient medical and medication supplies for clinical areas by monitoring inventory and placing orders as necessary. Ensure examination rooms are properly stocked and ready for patient visits.
  • Guarantee cost-effective procurement of supplies.
  • Manage chronic disease cases referred by providers and formulate suitable care plans.
  • Delegate appropriate chronic disease management referrals to LVNs.
  • Work jointly with the Nursing Director to maintain adherence to OSHA, local, state, and federal regulations.

Additional duties may be assigned as necessary to support operational requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Must possess a valid California Registered Nurse license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification is required. Clinical experience as a registered nurse in an outpatient clinic setting, preferably within a federally qualified health center, is essential. Experience functioning within patient-centered care teams is advantageous. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is preferred.

Candidates must demonstrate problem-solving and organizational abilities to foster an efficient workplace and achieve objectives. Background in chronic disease management, case management, utilization review, and quality improvement projects is desirable. Experience in an HIV medical care setting is also preferred.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE

Familiarity and hands-on experience with electronic health records systems, with a preference for eClinicalWorks.

REQUIRED ABILITIES

Must be capable of providing services without bias and working effectively with diverse communities. The ability to maintain accurate records and adhere to clinical guidelines and protocols is essential. Must work efficiently with a high degree of accuracy, operate and troubleshoot independently, and maintain a flexible schedule to complete tasks and meet client needs. Adaptability in addressing unexpected client situations is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is mainly an office-based role. Occasional bending, reaching, stooping, and lifting or moving materials weighing up to 25 pounds may be required. Daily use of a personal computer is necessary, involving the entry, viewing, and modification of text and graphics both on-screen and on paper.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Must hold a valid California driver’s license, provide proof of automobile liability insurance, and have access to a personal vehicle for work-related travel.
